Dr. Soma Chakravarty Ghosh won a Critical applause not only for her, “fine pliable voice that enables her to take the taarsaptak without a falsetto note” but also for “ the different shades of underlying emotion brought in through a sensuous stress on the words” of THUMRI.

Associated in her style with such giants as Pt. Omkarnath Thakur, ‘Gwalior Gharana’ Through his principal disciple Dr. Chittaranjan Jyotish, Soma was inspired from within her familyto start her career in Hindustani Vocal Music under mother Smt. Archana Chakravarty, at the age of thirteen, she had the singular distinction of completing her ‘Sangeet Prabhakar’ from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. She has thus been groomed in the traditional ‘Benaras Gharana’ under Pt. narayan Chakravarty. She has a great Blending and combination of playful expressions from Gwalior Gharana and throwing of Senia Gharana.

A graduate in literature from the Benaras Hindu University, she undertook post graduation in Music and later a doctorate on the same in 1987. Her doctorate enabled her to come close to Pt. Omkarnath Thakur Gharana. Earlier her tutelage under smt. Bageshwari Devi of the eminent Benaras Gharana helped her specialize in typical forms of the style as represented through Thumri, Tappa, Hori, Chaiti, Kajari, Dadra, and Ghazal. In 1988 she joined the Sangeet Research Academy, Calcutta And for the next two years she polished her art under Shri Bhaduri and Shri A. T. Kanan.

An artist of All India Radio. She has focused her creative energies by organizing musical soirees and events through Bhavanjali, Varanasi, which has helped to bring into focus rising talents. Her various performances on different platforms have been well received and commented upon.
